Spotify is testing a new subscription service called Spotify Plus that only costs $.99 per month for some users. However, it still has ads, and removing them is one of the main reasons to spend money on a music streaming subscription.
What Do You Get With Spotify Plus?
The price is about 10 times cheaper than Spotify Premium, which costs $9.99 per month and comes with lots of other advantages, including removing ads. Obviously, there will be some features eliminated to get the price down so low.
There are some valuable benefits with Spotify Plus. For example, you’ll be able to skip as many songs as you want, whereas the free tier only grants you six skips per hour. You’ll also get the ability to play any track you wish to instead of the more limited play functionality offered by the free tier, which is a great way to discover new music.
We’re unsure whether Spotify Plus will include features like higher-quality playback or downloads for offline listening. However, as more people test it, we should learn more about these other features. The fact that Spotify isn’t pushing them, though, leads me to believe that they won’t be part of this deal.
The Verge received a statement from a Spotify spokesperson who said, “We’re always working to enhance the Spotify experience and we routinely conduct tests to inform our decisions. We’re currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users.”
While it sounds like an excellent idea for Spotify to offer a cheaper plan for users who aren’t ready to shell out $9.99 a month, there’s no guarantee that this plan will become part of Spotify’s core offerings. The spokesperson said, “Some tests end up paving the way for new offerings or enhancements while others may only provide learnings.”
Also important to note is that Spotify may test the new subscription at various price points, so it may not be $.99 for all users. The company will want to see what price users are willing to pay before they finalize anything.
Can You Try Spotify Plus?
Unfortunately, Spotify seems to be testing Plus at random, so there’s no way to make sure you’re able to try it. If you do end up getting an invite, though, you may want to jump on it, as you’ll be one of the lucky few.
